The impact of mobile phones
Mobile phones have become increasingly popular in recent years. While people of various ages find mobile phones to be convenient and useful, university students tend to appreciate them more and are more dependent on them for the sense of security. A survey was conducted on a small group of students from University of Peradeniya, in which the students’ mobile phone usage was examined. The survey consisted of 23 questions on three different segments: Security, Academic life and Personal life. The survey results indicated that 63.4% of university students use mobile phones for their sense of security and 58.3% of students has responded that mobile phone usage is a disturbance to their academic life. The results also showed significant gender differences in mobile phone use for the sense of security. Multiple interpretations of the findings are discussed.
